James L Williams, MD

Dr. Williams decided to become a physician to combine his interest in academics with his desire to help others. Choosing Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation as his residency allowed for a holistic approach to the care of his patients. His medical expert work with all the accompanying research has only strengthened his application of the biopsychosocial model when caring for patients.

He was introduced to mindfulness when studying HapKiDo, a Korean martial art, in the years after moving to Jackson, Mississippi in 2001. Studying contemplative traditions led him to develop a personal yoga and mindfulness practice independent of the martial art.

Dr. Williams started his MBSR teacher training in March of 2017 with the U. Mass Center for Mindfulness course ‘Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction in Mind-Body Medicine.’ He has since achieved Qualified Instructor status and is trained to teach the MBSR program as it has been provided to participants for over 40 years.

Mindfulness is at the heart of a curriculum Dr. Williams is developing for people interested in learning about their health and wellbeing through the Insight Wellness Center. Although this is not the practice of medicine, he believes people can get life-changing benefits from these insights.
